PREREQUISITE SKILLS
To knit this cardigan, you need to know how to knit, purl, knit in the round, cast on stitches using the long-tail method, knit German short rows, make increases (those typically used for armholes), pick up and resume stitches, the colorwork technique, steeking, and bind off stitches using the Italian method. It is essential to be able to read charts, as the instructions for knitting the colorwork motif of the yoke are provided only in chart form.
CONSTRUCTION
This cardigan has a top-down, in-the-round construction. It is first knitted as if it were a sweater, meaning it starts by knitting the neckline, continues with the yoke, then the sleeves and body are separated, and the body is continued in the round. Next, the sleeves are picked up and knitted in the round to the cuff. It is made in one piece, without any seams. It is knitted in stockinette stitch in the round, with a colorwork motif on the yoke. The body and sleeves finish with a rib knit cuff. Once finished, the side stitches of the steek are reinforced with crochet, the button bands are knitted with two needles, and finally, the cardigan is cut from top to bottom along the center front stitch to make it open.
